In recognition of Child Abuse Awareness Month in April, the Family Sunshine Center is excited to offer a half-day workshop for nurses, social workers and other community professionals. The title of the workshop is “Hug Me, Don’t Shake Me: Addressing Shaken Baby Syndrome from Prevention to Care.” This free workshop will be held Saturday, April 30th, check-in begins at 8:00a.m., the workshop is from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Auburn Montgomery’s Goodwyn Hall. CEUs will be available for nurses and social workers at no cost. Keynote speakers include Dr. Joseph Ackerson, who specializes in pediatric neuropsychology and traumatic brain injury, discussing the injuries caused by Shaken Baby Syndrome, and Richard Burleson, Director of the Alabama Child Death Review System and Director of Injury Prevention Branch of Alabama Department of Public Health. Breakout sessions will follow. Kelley Parris-Barnes, Director of the Children’s Trust Fund of Alabama, will present a workshop about developing and implementing a prevention program, and Dr. Andrea Eden, Ph.D., training specialist for the Strengthening the System of Care for Alabamians with Traumatic Brain Injury Project, will present information about the behavioral impacts of TBI and the types of resources available to survivors and their families.
The Family Sunshine Center is pleased to partner with other agencies in the community including AUM, the Children’s Trust Fund of Alabama, Sherrie Myers and Montgomery Biscuits Baseball. Other community sponsors include the Alabama Nurses Association and the Center for Child and Adolescent Development.
